The Potential of Close Proximity

In Bill Hybel’s book, Just Walk Across the Room (the best book I’ve read on relational evangelism), he talks about what he calls “The Potential of Close Proximity.”

It’s the idea that even the most Christlike Christians on the planet will be totally ineffective unless they get near people who are living far from God.  In order to be in step with the mission of Jesus, we’ve got to be willing to develop relationships with unsaved, unchurched people.

Does it get messy sometimes?  Yes.  Did Jesus reach out to messed up people?  Absolutely!  In fact, those are the people he spent time pursuing–the ones who were missing–the ones who had not yet come to him.

Since the people who are missing matter to God, they should matter to us too.
